Install EMC Powerpath + Naviagent on Oracle Linux 6

I had to install Oracle Linux 6 from scratch on two servers that are going to be used in a RAC. As we’re going to use ASM to access the datafiles and the storage is provided by LUNS from an EMC Clariion, I had to install the Navisphere agent and the EMC PowerPath on a trial and error method.

And surprise, surprise, libraries were missing as usual when I tried to install the RPMs I downloaded from the manufacturers support sites.

Since none of the machines had internet access and I could only use the installation media as a mounted filesystem (through iLO), I thought it would be a good idea to create a new repository for yum and from there try to install the missing dependencies.

So, first step: Create the repo:

[root@A1UAC3DB10 ~]# yum update

Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin

This system is not registered with ULN.

ULN support will be disabled.

Setting up Update Process

When installing the PowerPath rpm the package complains about libraries present in gcc (why gcc is not fully installed by default on this distro is beyond me)

What the hell? Why is the 2.6.32-100 kernel here when the libraries were compiled against the old 2.6.32-71 kernel? Probably my mistake during the server installation…

Let’s change grub and restart the server:

  1. Thanks a lot man! I was googling since long to find a solution for the libc.so.6 installation on CentOS 6 64bit. I really needed 32bit version of these libraries! Thanks!

  2. Thanks, you saved me a lot of head banging!

  3. This is great. Thank you.
Do you have any idea whether this could be done for Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 2 on Oracle Linux 6 ?

  4. Once you created local repository, Why you didn’t use
    #yum install , instead of
    #rpm -ivh

    • Shariq, because the EMC PowerPath software is not on repository. You have to download it and install it “manually”.

      • Yes, I got it.
But my point is for example instead of running this

        #rpm -ivh /path-to/naviagentcli-6.26.32.0.72-1.noarch.rpm

        I will prefer

        #yum install /path-to/naviagentcli-6.26.32.0.72-1.noarch.rpm

By using this command the package will install by resolving its dependencies.

  5. Hi Shariq,
yes, you are right and you can resolve dependencies through yum after making the local repo, but I exemplified using rpm exactly because the yum was not resolving the 32 bit dependencies as needed (I suspect it was due to a faulty packaging of the naviagentcli rpm on that particular version) and created this post with this method so I could se one-by-one the needed deps.

Anyway, I haven’t touched this stuff in years (moved from being a linux/unix admin to the dark side of the force and to websphere architecture) and I guess recent/updated packages of the agents have solved all the mess it was at the time.
